The Masai, The Leakeys and ZuluGrass
I have always been a fan of the Leakey family who have been leaders in changing the face of African wildlife preservation. They have also been instrumental in helping the tribal African peoples survive and retain their culture.
How this relates to the concept of “epiphany” is that moment when Phillip and Katy Leakey saw that taking this common grass, not only taken for granted by the Masai themselves, but by everyone in general, could be used to address the poverty of the Masai people. Focusing on the women of the tribe, keeping in mind their ways of doing things and giving them the training needed to craft these pieces of jewelry made from ZuluGrass has made a noticeable impact on the standard of living of the tribe.
Seeing this and building a factory would perhaps have done the same thing, but to encourage these people to retain their traditional way of crafting things by sitting under a tree creating strands of lovely beads. Of course this is a romantic concept and making strand after strand of beads would also become tedious after a time, but it is, in this case, a communal tedium that in the tradition of the Masai becomes a meditation of sorts.
ZuluGrass jewelry can be purchased at The Ganesha Centre.
Add to favorites, I’ll use it.
